Job Seekers of a Certain Age
Employment Seekers of a Certain Age Employment Seekers of a Certain Age Employment searchers in their 50s might be generalized as checking the days to retirement or running up medical coverage costs. More seasoned experts depict how they've battled those observations at work search.Trude Diamond has a doctorate in training and numerous long periods of demonstrated, fruitful involvement with frameworks necessity building, instructional turn of events and plan, and composing and altering. She was on a most optimized plan of attack to senior positions and became used to accepting standard knocks in title and salary. The first time she wound up out of a vocation - a result of the website bust - she was 50 years of age. It took her five years to get recruited for anything other than transient agreements, yet she in the end found an occupation at a little organization in Tampa, Fla.After two years at that organization, her area of expertise's capacities were re-appropriated to India, and Diamond again ended up searching for an all day work with benefits. She has n't discovered one yet.Diamond is presently 63 and says she questions she will until the end of time get an all day line of work with benefits. She's not prepared for retirement, yet she doesn't feel that corporate America is prepared or ready to employ a more established specialist. I am perpetually going after positions through my impressive system of business partners and associates and on the web, and nothing, she said. I just truly needed to work at a vocation that I enjoyed and could accomplish for the following 10 years or so.Diamond's story isn't one of a kind. Stepping stools has spoken with many employment searchers and laborers age 55 and more seasoned who have gotten themselves jobless and holding up by a telephone that just won't ring. It's in excess of an inclination for Diamond and others in her circumstance. Joblessness and pursuit of employment really is increasingly hard for more established laborers. All things considered, laborers age 55 and more seasoned can hope to be jobless 35 weeks, 20 percent longer than those age 25 to 54 years of age, as per the Bureau of Labor Statistics.Experts who talked with Ladders said age has gotten a greater amount of an issue as conventional security nets have been destroyed in the last hardly any years. It's a confounded issue and, truly, it is an issue, said Laurence J. Stybel, fellow benefactor of Stybel, Peabody Associates Inc., and official in living arrangement at the Sawyer School of Business at Suffolk University in Boston. It's turning into an intense issue on the grounds that many children of post war America who thought they would resign at 59 1/2 to 62 are presently managing the result of the breakdown of their professional stability and the breakdown of their retirement reserves and are stating, 'Presently I need to work till 68 or perhaps 70.' But bosses aren't keen on that.Confront Age Head-OnWhat plan of action makes a more established showing searcher have? The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 secures individuals 40 years of age and more seasoned from segregation dependent on age. In any case, that doesn't imply that such separation doesn't occur, said Stybel. Many individuals attempt to conceal their ages on their resumes, by leaving off long periods of graduation and including just the most recent 15 years or so of work understanding. Except if you show up especially youthful for your age or have turned to a plastic medical procedure, this technique will be viable just until they meet you.Instead of attempting to muddle your age, said Stybel, address it head-on.Because of the legalities, managers and potential businesses won't raise the issue old enough, he said. In the event that you as the activity up-and-comer don't raise the issue, it won't be talked about. Also, if it's not talked about, it attempts to your disadvantage.Emphasize the experience and hard working attitude that accompany age, while exhibiting the adaptability and craving to succeed that ar e regularly ascribed more to more youthful workers.A parcel of organizations need youngsters since they're eager, said Stybel. The supposition that will be that someone 55 or more seasoned has the retirement all set up, the children are out of school, they needn't bother with the cash, they aren't eager. [Potential managers won't] ask you how hungry you are. It's a discourteous inquiry, and it additionally in a roundabout way manages age, so it could be an illicit inquiry. It's dependent upon you to bring it up. State, 'I'm eager; I truly need the cash, I need the cash, I'm going to work my rear end off for you.' Carrell Chadwell, a clinician and the creator of Changing Careers in a Changing World, noticed that numerous businesses will address (at any rate to themselves) the time span a more seasoned specialist will be with an association. Once more, the best guard is a solid offense, said Chadwell: They're probably going to consider to what extent you are going to remain. You need to make reference to that. Mention to them what your objectives are and that you will be there at any rate a few years.A increasingly entangled issue is that of medical coverage, or, from a business' viewpoint, how much will this individual cost our company? As individuals get more established, they're going to utilize medical coverage more, said Stybel. Also, especially in private companies, the expense of medical coverage goes up each year, and it's a significant expense. All in all, when a business takes a gander at a competitor beyond 55 years old, they're going to state, 'On the off chance that I recruit her, won't my medical coverage costs experience the rooftop? Since there's her, there's her better half⦠' But they won't bring it up in view of the legitimate issues and in light of the fact that it's awkward.Stybel suggests, you got it, that you raise the issue yourself. Defy the issue in a positive and expert way.Age and WisdomWith age comes insight, however on the off chan ce that it doesn't likewise accompany a full-time profited position, there are options: More established laborers are outsourcing, setting themselves up as self employed entities, going to work for littler organizations that perhaps can't bear the cost of full-time representatives, Chadwell said.Be forceful about looking, said Eric Wentworth, 62, an advertising official, who, in his own words, went from brilliant kid to discolored collectible. Accomplish something out of the crate. Point out how your abilities/experience can take care of the considerable number of issues as well as meet all the capabilities of the activity. Continuously be cheery and positive. At long last, ask a great deal. Since even with this, you will be oppressed due to your age - even by managers who are a similar age.

How to Choose Promotional Products for Your Business
How to Choose Promotional Products for Your Business When choosing promotional products for your business, there are many things to consider. Do you need promotional items? What items should you purchase? How many items do you need? How much money are you willing to spend? There are a wide variety of promotional products available today. Long gone are the days of only offering free pens to your clients or potential clients. Now, you can order customized calendars, portfolios, notepads, umbrellas, and key chains. The first question to consider is your promotional product needs. Do you have an upcoming trade show? If so, free items and promotional pieces are an easy way to attract people to your trade show booth. If you send a follow up or thank you letter to clients after a job is completed, a trinket or item is a good way to keep your name in front of them even longer. If you meet with potential clients in-person, offering a free pen or notepad is another way to make an impression. What items should you purchase? While pens are a tried-and-true item, there are so many other possibilities. Tailor the item to your situation. Last summer I attended the Northern Wisconsin State Fair. While I gave away pens and small notepads, I also specially ordered can coolers specifically for the booth at the fair. It was July and it was HOT outsideâ"can coolers were a huge success at this event. Be sure to plan ahead; ordering promotional products takes time. If you want to be ready for a particular event, order your products and have them ready in plenty of time. You donât want to pay a rush charge for something that could have easily been ordered months earlier. Finally, decide on a budget. While ordering a larger quantity of an item may save you money, you may not even know if your promotional item will be a success. Donât fall in the trap of ordering more just to get your per unit cost reduced. Start with a smaller quantity and if it works, order more next time. Most importantly, take time to consider what is best for your specific business. What works for one business may not work well for another. Think about what your customers will want from your business. And, consider what will keep your name in front of them for the longest period of time. Enjoy the search for promotional items â" the possibilities are endless!

6 Questions To Ask At The End Of Any Job Interview
6 Questions To Ask At The End Of Any Job Interview Weve all been there; the interviews going well, youve prepared your answers (after reading the Interview Advice section on our Blog of course!) and you think youve clinched it but then it all starts to go wrong. It happens right at the end when the tables are turned and the employer asks you if youve got any questions for them. Caught off guard, you literally dont know what to say and panic and ask the first thing you can think of which happens to be some random question about holiday allowance and its all over. Now, despite us blogging about this interview question before, this one still catches people out. Why? Because it can be hard to know exactly what questions you should and shouldnt ask at this point after all, you havent got the job yet! To help you out, weve come up with a list of six questions (or even seven!) we feel are OK to ask at the end of any interview, regardless of what role youre being interviewed for. 1. Why Is This Role Now Available? This is a great question to ask because it shows that youve got an interest in the structure of the company and it also shows that youre keen to find out whose shoes (if anyones!) youre going to be filling. There are a number of reasons why a role has been created it could be that someone has been promoted, someone has quit, someone has shifted departments or someone has gone on maternity/paternity leave or taken a sabbatical or it could be that the role is brand new. Either way its good to know what the reason is because this might affect whether you choose to take the job eg. if the previous candidate quit because they found it too stressful. 2. What Do You Think The Biggest Challenges Are In This Role? Asking a question like this shows the interviewer that youre serious about the role and shows them that youre keen to find out what difficulties you might encounter should you be offered the role. OK, so a couple of challenges might have been mentioned in the job ad but its still worth asking the interviewer for their personal opinion. Being aware of possible challenges at this stage should help you to plan how to overcome them should you be offered the role, which should in turn make your life much easier in the long run. 3. What Are The Business Plans For The Future How Would This Affect This Role? This is another question thats definitely worth asking at the end of any job interview. Why? Because it shows that youre keen to learn about the business future which suggests to the employer that you plan on staying at the company for an extended period of time if you were to be offered the role something every employer wants to hear from a prospective candidate. Similarly, the fact that youre asking how the business future plans might affect the role shows that youre keen to find out about how your role might change in the future and again, suggests that you see a future with their company. 4. What Is Your Companys Policy On Training Progression? Finding about any training and progression policies and opportunities is definitely worthwhile at this point for a couple of reasons. Firstly, if the company has limited training and progression opportunities and youre looking for one which has lots, you might want to reconsider if this is the right company/role for you. And secondly, if youre asking about progression opportunities, it indicates again to an employer that youd be keen to stick with the company and progress throughout their business. 5. Do You Have Any Doubts About My Suitability For This Role? This question is a bit of a cheeky one because youre asking for a bit of an insight into how the employer feels about you as a prospective candidate but its definitely worth asking. Why? Because you might be able to address some of these doubts there and then and make yourself into a much more appealing candidate. 6. Why Did You Choose To Work For This Company? If youre having doubts about whether this particular company is the right option for you regards culture-fit, its definitely worth asking your interviewer why they chose to work to work for the company because they might help to alleviate some of these doubts and they might name some reasons or aspects of the company which you werent even aware of. 7. When Might I Expect To Hear From You Regarding This Role? Its always worth asking when you might expect to hear back from the employer at the end of the interview for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it shows that youre still keen on the role. And secondly, being given a timeframe on when you might hear should help to put your mind at rest and should stop you from staring at your phone and refreshing your inbox every two seconds from the moment you leave the room until the moment you hear from them.

I consistently draw in with significant partners and I feel certain about the manner in which I present myself during those communications.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders' magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!I am no more peculiar to testing discussions. Truth be told, I value staying ready during extreme conversations. Despite the fact that I interface with ranking directors normally, I don't have a great deal of correspondence with inner higher administration in my position. Without a doubt, I'm alright with senior officials from outer organizations, however I see myself as an all out new kid on the block with regar ds to exploring a discussion with my own management.MY TIME TO ADVOCATE FOR MYSELFLast year I found out about an inner employment opportunity inside my area of expertise that I took a solid enthusiasm for. It joined a ton of my current aptitudes and furthermore gave an incredible chance to development and the chance of cleaning some of the abilities I needed to refine. After communicating enthusiasm to my immediate director, with whom I have an extraordinary affinity, I discovered that I was being disregarded the open door for a more youthful male partner. To make an already difficult situation even worse, I found out that they disregarded me because of an immense misinterpretation on their part. Since I am a hitched mortgage holder, they accepted that I would not discover the position engaging as it required continuous travel.I have never left the workplace, however I was so disturbed after that discussion that I got together my PC and returned home for the afternoon. Reflectively, that was not the best move, however I attempt to be delicate with myself and treat each experience as a learning exercise. Take it from me however, don't storm out of the workplace, ever! Sitting on my lounge chair feeling frustrated about myself with a skillet of brownies, I understood that being irate and venting to loved ones was not going to change my circumstance or demonstrate that I was the best possibility for the role.I realized I was the most ideally equipped individual for the activity and that I needed this position, regardless of what individuals in my office accepted. I chose without further ado that I was going to move toward higher administration to demand the chance to put forth my defense for why I was a solid fit for the position. I will concede that it was alarming to move toward senior administration, however I realized that nobody would be a superior backer for me than, well, me. Here are the means I experienced to handle this startling conversation:THINK BEFORE YOU ACTThis guidance appears glaringly evident, yet it's anything but difficult to be receptive to such disillusioning news. As enticing as venting to your work friends may be (or exiting as I did!), it's critical to stay level headed. You may know you're really amazing individual for the activity. You most likely likewise realize that they've committed a horrendous error by disregarding you. In any case, it's essential to stay proficient and vital in your way to deal with showing that.BE YOUR OWN HYPE WOMANI know when I experience a difficulty or am neglected for an energizing open door at work, the primary thing that strikes a chord is I'm sufficiently bad. Rather than letting the negative vitality leak in, utilize the chance to audit your resume to think about your experience, recollect your accomplishments, and assemble your certainty back up.Being thumped down happens to everybody sooner or later in their vocation, and it's essential to develop yourself back before you approach your boss. On the off chance that I am having an intense day at work and not feeling my full worth, I will regularly make a rundown of things that I do well in my job, what I add to my group, and why I am an advantage for my area of expertise. It truly siphons me up and causes me to feel my value!REQUEST THE MEETINGThis is the most alarming part of being your own best supporter, however don't let outrage or dread permit you to pass up the chance to propel your profession. Examining your accomplishments and involvement in higher administration or the employing supervisor is a basic piece of pushing for yourself in the working environment. Distinguish the right individual to meet with and be aware of your office culture. Do LinkedIn Recommendations Really Add Value
Do LinkedIn Recommendations Really Add Value By now we have probably all seen the new LinkedIn endorsements which allow you to easily click endorse your connections. As lovely as this is and everyone likes to be endorsed, from a recruiterâs point of view, nothing beats a written LinkedIn recommendation. This has always been the most beneficial element to the LinkedIn profile in my own opinion. When I am checking out a profile from someone who has sent me their CV (and when they havenât) I go straight to the recommendations first. Fake recommendations Most recruiters realise that peopleâs friends or family write many recommendations on LinkedIn and do you know what, good luck to them. Just be aware that an interviewer may print off your recommendations and ask you in your interview how you know âAimee Batemanâ and when did you work together? Talk to me about that? If you donât give a genuine answer then it may be clear that you are âblaggingâ a little. I personally have never done this at interview, but I do know interviewers who have. Recommendations that DONâT stand out So many recommendations are vague and full of buzzwords that they often sound the same. Aimee was a pleasure to work with and always gave 100%. She got on with the team and got the job done. I would recommend her in the future I think we can all agree that this is a great recommendation and I would of course be grateful to receive anything of this nature. The problem is, it is similar to thousands of other recommendations and when we hear the same thing repeatedly, it loses its impact. We can all think of a song that we loved, but it lost its impact after we played it for the one-hundredth time. I know that we canât control what people write in their recommendations. I also know that when you get sent a recommendation the last thing you want to do is send it back and ask them to delete the buzzwords. What we can do however is ensure that we improve the quality of recommendations we provide for people and if you have asked for one, then you could give that person some guidelines. Recommendations that DO stand out Ask them to think about the following: What is your key strength (include example) What did they enjoy about working with you the most (include example) What word would they use to describe you and why (include example) One problem that they had, which you helped them overcome and how (include example, their feelings and your action points) I worked with a lady called Janette a few years ago, who hadnât had a sick day in ten years. Her previous manager talked about her work ethic and included this example. We asked him to include that in his recommendation and the feedback she got from potential employers was amazing. This is the reason she was invited to an interview with a client of mine, but maybe thatâs another blog post. Did you help with a cost saving project, due to your impressive negotiation skills? Or are you so skilled at dealing with conflict situations, that you were the person they sent in whenever their was a problem anywhere. Were you so committed to the business that you even answered a work call on your wedding day? (I donât think this is cool, but you can see what Iâm trying to do here!) Donât forget to do the same when writing recommendations for others that are truly going to benefit them in their job search. I hope this article doesnât sound ungrateful in anyway and I know that it is wonderful to receive a genuine recommendation. I am so thankful for each and every one of mine. I just think in this crowded job market, everything you can do to stress your benefits and the value you bring, is worth doing. RELATED: How Recruiters Can Make Use of LinkedIn Recommendations

Why Gen Y outperforms everyone at work
Why Gen Y outperforms everyone at work Maybe the reason that young people are optimistic in the face of a poor job market is that young people can probably do your job better than older people can. The truth is, non-gen-y-workers have a bunch of shortcomings when it comes to competing with todays workforce. Management consultant Stephen Denning has a great little history of management in his new book, The Leaders Guide to Radical Management. He points out that managers of the 20th century were trained to supervise people to get them to do stuff, to perform tasks. But now that most people are knowledge workers and not semi-skilled workers, we need managers who inspire, motivate, and encourage collaboration-managers, even, who care about the well-being of their employees and strive to make the workplace meaningful. And thats not a corporate world where the older set is generally comfortable. Yup, Im arguing that Gen Y that age-group that gets dumped on for acting all entitled can teach everyone something about making it in the modern workforce. A lot, actually, because Gen Y is more prepared and has an advantage over older folks with far more experience. Here are areas where Gen Y can run circles around everyone at work: 1. Productivity Young people can find information faster and sort information faster than older people. For example, young people are more likely to use the best tool at the best time: They collaborate on wiki-type tools with ease. They crowdsource. Theyre aces with downloading software onto the company laptop to become more productive and efficient. Think about it: Younger people dont utter the phrase information overload because they dont feel it; they benefit from the plasticity of the brain, which has adapted, over their Internet-based lives to process information faster. 2. Communication Its popular to worry that Gen Y cant write and talk face-to-face, but thats nonsense. It turns out that young people are better communicators than everyone else. A large and long-term study at Stanford shows that the process of writing online, for a large audience, throughout childhood, is a terrific way to learn to write effectively far more so than the process of writing for a single reader (i.e., the classroom teacher). And while most generations wrote only for school assignments, Gen Y-ers have been writing constantly ever since they could type, which means since they were little kids. The Stanford study concludes that living online makes Gen Ys communication skills sharper and more effective than those of older generations. 3. Career mobility Here are some sectors that are getting absolutely killed right now: Banking, manufacturing, real estate, and construction. Sure, young people are in those fields-and others, for that matter, that have been hard hit-but these sectors are crowded with Baby Boomers. And Baby Boomers just arent as comfortable as their younger colleagues when it comes to job-hopping. I realize its generally easier to job-hop when youre younger, for all the obvious reasons, but I older people just have to lower their salary expectations, be open to the idea of changing fields, and realize that the in-demand jobs now require skills where years of experience dont matter: techcommunications analysts, self-enrichment educators, are occupations that are booming right now. 4. Career resilience. Young people use entrepreneurship as a career safety net. And when they dont earn enough money, they are likely to move back in with their parents, which is probably not a bad thing for them to do (Parents: comments below please). This means that when young people cant find a job they like, they make their own, and that makes it easier for them to ride out a lousy economy. Even better, young people are starting companies in their parents basement instead of taking entry-level jobs. They are choosing temp jobs over full-time jobs and they care more about where they live and what they learn in their careers than they do about titles and salaries. The ability to live where you want has never been greater, and new resources are popping up to help people achieve this flexibility. So what can you do if youre feeling nervous about job security? Congratulate yourself for being realistic. There is no job security anymore; and we all know that age discrimination against baby boomers is rampant (sorry, but its true). But heres the key: No matter how old you are, you can learn Gen Y skills. Learn to communicate as they do, and learn to collaborate as they do. Stop worrying that the younger crowd is getting the jobs you want, and start thinking more like a Gen-y-er. And if you want to know what generation you a really fall into, take this test.

Are You Your Own Bully
Are You Your Own Bully When I was much younger, I was sort of bullied. I say âsort ofâ because there was no physical harm done and there was nothing I would consider verbal abuse. Being a darker-skinned person was the cause for much of the ridicule. Being an African, your parents recourse comes in two forms. One is asking you: âAre words going to kill you?â The other is, âWell, you will be a stronger person because of it.â I donât mean to make my parents sound harsh but African culture expects certain toughness when it comes to things like this, and besides they were right; I did become a stronger person because of it. Still, it wasnât until my late teens, that I truly became comfortable in my own skin, literally. When the movie, âDark Girlsâ came out it was interesting to see that I wasnât the only one who had struggled with it. Women of all age ranges, even women in their 50s still had painful memories of their ridicule. It was heart-breaking to watch, but I think it made me realize that it had been a blessing for me to intentionally âget over itâ at a young age. Have you ever had anything people made fun of you for? When most people meet me, they recognize a confidence that I have and for the most part itâs true. I am confident in my intelligence, personality, and values. Still, it wasnât until something my senior year college roommate said that made me realize I was insecure about how attractive I thought others thought I was. We were talking about my inability (which is really my unwillingness) to approach guys. She said, âI think you automatically assume that guys youâre attracted to wonât be attracted to youâ¦.and thatâs sillyâ Those words rang in my ear â" it was like a secret about me that I wasnât aware of until she pointed it out. Then I was watching a Lifetime movie that centered on the same theme and this girl told her brother that he was already ruling himself out without even giving himself a chance. He was being his own bully. Are you your own bully? Do you sometimes think that youâre not good-looking enough or smart enough or generally good enough for something (or someone) that you donât even try to go after what you want? I know that up until recently and after talking with a new friend who is very into the psychology of women and the way we think, I had been my own bully when it came to that area of my life. I did feel like guys that I was attracted to would not go for me. The same way some of my friends thought they werenât smart enough for certain classes or majors or jobs. The same way people I know believe they arenât good enough to be at certain restaurants or places or around certain people. I had to change the way I saw myself. For someone who feels so confident in many things, to be insecure about an area like this is, well, a little ridiculous. I had to have a serious conversation with myself and to STOP being my own bully. Looks, intelligence, values, etc. â" theyâre all touchy subjects .They are also things that can make us feel insecure at one time or another because there will always be someone who seemingly is prettier, smarter, funnier and âbetter.â Still, itâs high-time many of us start believing that we DESERVE what we want. Whether itâs the guy youâre attracted to at your gym (cough, cough), the job you seek, the lifestyle you want and even the person you want to be. YOU DESERVE IT. So I ask again: Are you your own bully? If so, about what? Moreover, what are you going to do about it TODAY?

Why Hire Online Professional Resume Writing Services?
Why Hire Online Professional Resume Writing Services?Professional resume writing services are the most reliable and cost effective means of presenting a potential employer with your best qualifications. They are able to present you as a valued and highly qualified employee. When you hire a professional resume writer to work with you, you will benefit from a resume that is clear, concise, and interesting.Online professional resume writing services are skilled in producing professionally written resumes in a timely manner. Some require that your work history is included, but others do not. In addition, many online professional resume writing services offer sample resumes for you to use. This allows you to get an idea of what to expect.A growing number of companies are using online professional resume writing services because they are more cost effective than going through an agency. Using an agency requires more than just a resume. These service providers also include a cover letter th at is required by many employers. The top reason to choose online resume writing services is the cost. They are often much less expensive than the average agency, and they often allow you to customize your resume to the specifications of the employer. Once you have hired a professional resume writer, you can rest assured that your resume will be delivered quickly, thus maximizing your time for other business related tasks. An online resume service may also customize your resume to the job you are applying for. However, when the resume is customized, it becomes easy to meet the requirements of the employer. The wording on your resume can also be customized. Even though the company or employer may be the same, the requirements for completing the task at hand are often different. Some online professional resume writing services also offer the option of an electronic application that will help your potential employer to make a decision about whether or not to hire you.Another great advantage of hiring a resume writer is that the writer can address any questions you may have. Most people like the idea of writing a resume, but do not understand why it has to be so wordy. The typical resume is over three hundred pages long. Is That Hiring Company Ghosting You
Is That Hiring Company Ghosting You Can you imagine a world where companies devote as much energy and resources to the job candidate experience as they do to the customer experience? Nice dream, eh? Unfortunately, reality is not so pleasant; itâs actually trending in the opposite direction. According to a recent Manpower Group Solutions survey, 58 percent of job seekers say that a negative candidate experience makes them less likely to buy a companyâs products or services. During my three decades as a hiring manager and a job-seeker, and now as a coach of thousands of candidates, the level of candidate frustration has gotten worse. Not one job-seeker at any age and with any background has said to me, âWow, even though I didnât get the job, that company was so respectful that I like them more now than before I applied!â Per Manpower, the following are the top most impactful negative candidate experiences: 61% Lack of transparency on salary or job description 60% Negative interview experience 56% No employer follow-up after initial interview 55% No response to a submitted job application 48% Response to a job application 6-8 weeks after submittal This negative trend is shocking to me for two reasons: 1 Technology can enable candidate respect. Most companies have access to technology called an Applicant Tracking System (ATS), which has the functionality to send customized messages to candidates on every step of the recruiting and hiring process: After a candidate applies on a company website (or via any job board). After a first round interview or screen via phone, video or live. After a second or third round interview. Notifying the candidate that they will or will not proceed to the next step of the hiring process. Unfortunately, even with this technology, the âblack holeâ of online applications has become a sink hole. Even when a candidate has the benefit of an internal employee referral, introduction to a hiring manager, or good internal networking, the corporate silence is deafening. 2 Marketing principles recognizing the long-term value of a customer are ignored with job candidates. The massive impact of customer loyalty is critical to every company, small, medium or large, and carefully measured and tracked. Companies budget huge marketing dollars to attract and retain customers and build loyalty. Customer loyalty is a critical element to generate repeat business, to cross-sell or up-sell products and services, to establish competitive differentiation, and to generate word-of-mouth marketing. Imagine that for every position there are 100 applicants, 4 final candidates, and 1 new hire. What an opportunity to create âraving fansâ rather than frustrated customers. Itâs no wonder sites such as Glassdoor.com are filled with complaints instead of compliments about the hiring process. There are several probable causes for this decline in candidate care; I have two theories. Employee compensation is not tied to candidate satisfaction. There are two major parties tied to a single hiring process: recruitment â" typically managed by human resources, and the hiring manager. Yet neither are measured or compensated on the post-process impact on job applicants and candidates. Candidates try to follow up with e-mails, phone calls, and LinkedIn messages, yet they are mostly ignored. Hiring executives are abdicating to Recruiting and Human Resources. When I was a senior sales team hiring manager at Microsoft there were no standard rules or processes to notify applicants of their status, even if they had interviewed and were in âwait mode.â However, I was empowered to do what I felt was the right thing; so, my recruiter and I agreed that every applicant would receive a note of acknowledgement and appreciation. Then, after an informational interview or formal interview, each candidate would receive an update. I sent the finalists a personal e-mail and my recruiter sent e-mails to the others. I believe that hiring managers should be responsible for the brand impact of their hiring process and should continue to ask, âWhat can we do to improve every candidateâs impression?â Beyond simple courtesy notes and prompt responses to inquiries, there is so much more that a company can do to turn a candidateâs miserable job search experience into a âwow factor.â With small inexpensive actions, a company can stand out as a kind considerate organization. And a great brand. Join Dana Manciagliâs Job Search Master Class now and get the most comprehensive job search system available! #JSMC #careeradvice #jobsearch #jobcandidateexperience #hiringprocess
